Knowledge is a Canadian English language public educational cable and satellite television network that broadcasts throughout the province of British Columbia. It is owned by the Knowledge Network Corporation, a provincial crown corporation, and began broadcasting in 1981. Knowledge covers a full range of programming topics and genres including childrens, social-political issues, history, arts, culture and music, as well as science, technology and natural history. With funding from the provincial government and voluntary contributions from over 26,000 donors households, Knowledge used to produce over 50 hours of original programming per year. However, as a result of a new Strategic Plan (2008-2011), all in-house production was discontinued. Now, all new programming is acquired, co-produced, pre-bought and commissioned from Canadian and international independent producers.
In September 2008, Knowledge Network was re-branded as an all-digital, 24-7, educational media service on television and the internet. The programming focus is: kids all day, every day ; family time early evening, every evening ; and arts and culture all night, every night. A new logo (K: ), name (Knowledge: ), positioning statement (Pass it On), and URL (Knowledge.ca), were also introduced.
